Explicative guide to DELF / DALF / TCF

The different exam tests
The DELF is an international certification in French as a foreign language (FLE) which certifies an elementary or survival level in the French language. The acronym DELF means “Diploma of Studies in French Language”.
It is issued by the French Ministry of National Education, Higher Education and Research, and is valid for life.
The DELF A2 assesses language skills in four main areas:
- Oral comprehension:
Ability to understand simple instructions and short, simple conversations. - Comprehension of writings:
Ability to understand short and simple texts such as announcements, messages, postcards, etc. - Written production:
Ability to write short, simple messages, fill out forms and write brief descriptions. - Oral production:
Ability to participate in short conversations and provide simple information on familiar topics.
The DELF A2 is generally intended for learners who have acquired basic skills in French and who can communicate in simple everyday situations. It is a widely recognized exam internationally and is often used as proof of language proficiency for studies, jobs or administrative procedures in French-speaking countries or with international organizations.
The DALF B1 is an international certification in French as a foreign language (FLE) which certifies an intermediate level in the French language. The acronym DALF means “Diploma In-depth French Language Diploma”. It is issued by the French Ministry of National Education, Higher Education and Research, and is valid for life.
The DALF B1 assesses language skills in four main areas:

Oral comprehension:
Ability to understand clear, articulate conversations and speech on familiar topics in the areas of education, work, leisure, etc. - Comprehension of writings:
Ability to understand common texts addressing concrete subjects in different fields. - Written production:
Ability to write clear and structured texts on familiar subjects, to express opinions and to justify points of view. - Oral production:
Ability to participate in conversations by giving detailed information, to argue, to recount experiences, etc.
The DALF B1 is designed for learners who have reached an intermediate level in French
and who can communicate effectively in various situations of daily, professional or academic life. This certification is widely recognized internationally and is often required for university studies or jobs in French-speaking countries.
The TCF general public is aimed at anyone aged 16 or over whose mother tongue is not French and who wishes, for academic reasons (students, future students, interns, etc.), professional (employees or future employees, etc.) or personal, have your level of French assessed.
The TCF means: “French Knowledge Test”.
This TCF is made up of 3 compulsory tests, presented in the form of multiple choice questions (MCQ) and 2 complementary and optional tests, offered in the form of exercises and which the candidate can choose to take or not depending on their needs:
- Oral comprehension:
Collective test: 29 multiple choice questions (4 answer choices, only one correct answer). - Mastery of language structures:
Collective test: 18 multiple choice questions (4 answer choices, only one correct answer). - Written comprehension:
Collective test: 29 multiple choice questions (4 answer choices, only one correct answer). - Written expression:
Collective test: 3 exercises - Oral expression:
Individual face-to-face test with an examiner: 3 exercises
